Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin are developing new approaches for energy use and emissions mitigation in the built environment, where global demand is growing for better technology and tools to support efficiency in building design, construction, and operations. 

A new gift from Yardi®, an investment and property management software developer, will support cross-campus research efforts coordinated by the UT Energy Institute to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the built real estate environment. 

A new website co-founded by University of Texas School of Law professor David Spence and supported by the Energy Institute is offering a unique platform for thought-provoking analysis of the tradeoffs associated with the energy transition.

UT Austin’s Cockrell School Engineering has honored five distinguished engineering graduates with 2019 Distinguished Engineering Graduate Awards. One of the world’s leading programs for computational science, engineering, mathematics and medicine has been renamed to honor its founder, J. Tinsley Oden. The Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, draws its faculty from 23 departments and five schools and colleges at UT Austin. Engineers at The University of Texas at Austin and North Carolina State University have found an additional line of defense to detect threats posed by malware that do not rely on the detection and protection provided by existing anti-virus software programs. Their method identifies the presence of malware in large-scale embedded computer systems by monitoring power usage and identifying unusual surges as signs of unwelcome security threats. The study was led by Shijia Wei, a Ph.D.

The Cockrell School of Engineering’s Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics recently celebrated the grand opening of its new home on UT Austin campus — the newly renovated Aerospace Engineering Building (ASE).

Data collected from nearly two decades of research gathered by a twin satellite system launched in 2002 continues to contribute to the world’s understanding of global climate patterns. The satellite system, known as the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), was led by Byron Tapley and other researchers in UT Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering’s Center for Space Research, along with colleagues from NASA and the German Aerospace Centre.

Legendary Engineering Prof. John Goodenough has added yet another prestigious award to his mantelpiece – the Royal Society of London’s Copley Medal, the world’s oldest scientific prize.
