The Energy Institute, in partnership with the Office of the Vice President for Research, is pleased to announce a new research effort which will support UT researchers in cross-campus, interdisciplinary projects under an overarching focus on Fueling a Sustainable Energy Transition. Catalyzing impactful research and collaborative approaches at UT is central to our mission, and this is a unique opportunity for the UT campus community to build teams around innovative and emerging 'energy themes' which are critical to Fueling a Sustainable Energy Transition.

Opportunity Highlights

  • The call for proposals specifically seeks teams to present and perform research activities around an Energy Theme within an overarching focus on: Fueling a Sustainable Energy Transition (FSET).
  • The total research seed funding is $2.8 million, to be distributed between 5-7 interdisciplinary teams for research work over a two-year (24 month) period starting in January 2020 (Spring 2020). Proposed budgets may be up to $300,000 for four or more PIs/Co-PIs per team or up to $400,000 for six or more PIs/Co-PIs per team
  • Critical examinations and bold proposals are encouraged. EI seeks proposals that address important areas of study that might be preliminary, theoretical, challenging to existing paradigms, or cannot otherwise gain traction with sponsors without some initial work that demonstrates the value of the research.
  • Proposals should propose work that is early stage and/or difficult to fund via traditional sponsors (e.g., government agencies, non-profit organizations, industry) because it falls outside of the sponsor’s missions.
  • Proposals that include faculty and research staff from multiple colleges, schools, departments, or research units are strongly encouraged. This is a major criterion in evaluation.
  • Concept Paper deadline is Sunday, September 15, 2019,11:00 p.m.
  • Full Proposal deadline is Tuesday, October 15, 2019, 5:00 p.m.
  • For more details and to submit a proposal, view the competition page. Questions may be directed to Riffat Manasia, Director of Research Coordination & Partnerships at the Energy Institute (Riffat.Manasia@austin.utexas.edu)
