The ultimate goal of this research initiative is plainly stated:

Fuel a sustainable energy transition.

The Energy Institute launched a two-year research initiative beginning in August 2019 with a call for proposals from multidisciplinary teams across the University of Texas. The original initiative was intended to fund up to seven teams, but given the resounding response, EI expanded the research funding to twelve research teams.

The short-term outcomes from the projects can be quantified in the hundreds of research publications, dozens of conference presentations, and hundreds of thousands in continued grant funding. However, the long-term reverberations from this foundational research will become apparent in the decades to come as our societies are shaped by innovation and climate catastrophe.
