Wind poised to supplant coal in Texas

New coal retirements recently announced by Dallas-based Luminant means Texas’ wholesale electricity market will soon lose significant coal generation capacity, writes Joshua Rhodes, a research fellow in UT’s Energy Institute. Moreover, Texas is expected to add another 4,000 MW of wind power to its system by 2018, meaning wind capacity will soon exceed coal capacity in Texas in the near future.
