Rumors of coal power’s demise are not greatly exaggerated

While there are legitimate questions about how competitive markets will ensure a reliable supply of electricity, a proposed rule to subsidize coal-fired power plants that are struggling to compete with other, less-expensive and cleaner electricity generators is wrong-headed and unnecessary, writes Prof. David Spence. Spence, who teaches the policy and politics of energy regulation in UT’s School of Law and the McCombs School Business, disputes the Trump Administration’s claim that subsidies for coal are necessary to ensure system reliability.
