Renowned UT Engineering Prof. Dr. John B. Goodenough has another prestigious honor to add to his mantle: the 2017 Robert A. Welch Award in Chemistry. Goodenough first received wide acclaim following his invention of the lithium-ion battery in 1979, paving the way for the growth of cell phones and other portable electronic devices. His latest breakthrough, completed with Cockrell School of Engineering senior research fellow Maria Helena Braga, was the announcement earlier this year of a low-cost, noncombustible, all-solid-state battery that has three times as much energy density as today's lithium-ion batteries. Goodenough earned the Japan Prize in 2000; the Enrico Fermi Award, in 2009; the Charles Stark Draper Prize, in 2014; and the National Medal of Science, in 2011.
