New center to explore better water purification methods

A new UT Austin research center will focus on finding more creative approaches to use and reuse existing water supplies and improve water purification methods. Led by Chemical Engineering Prof. Benny Freeman, the Center for Materials for Water and Energy SysTems is funded by a $10.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Frontiers Research Centers program. The unit brings together researchers from UT Austin, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Associate directors for the new center are Lynn Katz, director of UT’s Center for Water and the Environment, and Rachel Segalman, chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering at UC Santa Barbara.
