McDonald Observatory collaborates with West Texas oil and gas producers to protect night skies

UT Austin’s renowned McDonald Observatory is collaborating with West Texas oil and gas producers to reduce light pollution from drilling rigs and related activities, which has the potential to drown out the light from stars and galaxies. Reducing the light from rigs and other oilfield structures, which also decreases electricity costs for oil and gas producers, is critical to the observatory’s study of the mysteries of the universe.
