How the Texas energy industry should move forward after Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey taught us some valuable lessons about the vulnerability of Texas' energy industry, writes Energy Institute Deputy Director and Engineering Prof. Dr. Michael Webber in a new op-ed in the Dallas Morning News. While the Gulf Coast is no stranger to hurricanes, the damage this time was not so much from high winds and rain, but from massive flooding. In response, energy companies will have to invest in new and stronger infrastructure; cities and regional planners should reconsider development policies; and government should invest in better information-sharing systems, Webber writes. Ultimately, the Gulf Coast will remain a prime place for energy companies to call home, for the same reasons it always has: access to cheap labor, acceptance of the industry, and ports that move product to the world.
