Abstract: The global pandemic has had a profound impact on the energy industry. The available statistical data make it difficult to assess the full scale and persistence of the shocks to which the industry was exposed but it is obvious at this point that the impacts will be significant. The pandemic is likely to accelerate and reinforce the incipient social and economic trends which will translate into reduction, or slower rate of growth, of demand for energy commodities (for example, work at home, changing consumption patterns). The industry has to rethink the approach to risk management, with reduced emphasis on short-term measures of risk (for example, value-at-risk) and pay more attention to the long-term changes in the market structure and rapidly changing social attitudes.
