VP Corporate Science and Technology Projects
Dr. Shaffiq A. Jaffer is a distinguished leader in energy innovation, currently serving as Vice President of Corporate Science and Technology Projects in North America at TotalEnergies, a role he has held since 2009. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta and earned his Ph.D. from McMaster University.
Dr. Jaffer is a Fellow of both the Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE) and the Chemical Institute of Canada (FCIC). At TotalEnergies, he spearheads strategic research collaborations with leading academic institutions and government laboratories across the United States and Canada, with additional partnerships in Europe and Asia. His work is dedicated to advancing technologies that support the company’s Net Zero ambition and the broader transition to sustainable energy.
His research focuses on closing the carbon cycle, enabling seasonal energy storage, and promoting the circularity of chemicals and materials. Key areas of interest include Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), Direct Air Capture, hydrogen production, electrification of refining and chemical manufacturing, and renewable energy systems including solar, wind, and energy storage.
Prior to joining TotalEnergies, Dr. Jaffer held research and engineering roles at Procter & Gamble and Koch-Glitsch. He has published extensively across a wide range of scientific disciplines and continues to contribute thought leadership in the field of sustainable energy innovation.
