Researchers improve efficiency of algae cultivation for biofuels
Dr. Halil Berberoglu, an assistant professor in UT Austin’s mechanical engineering department, and Thomas Murphy, a Ph.D. candidate in the department’s Thermal Fluid Systems track, have made strides in improving the efficiency of algae cultivation by mimicking the way trees deliver nutrients and transport sap while allowing better control over growing conditions. Read more about the research in a Scientific American blog by UT Austin graduate David Wogan.
National Science Foundation honors UT student for advanced battery research video
Arturo Gutierrez, a Materials Science and Engineering Ph.D. candidate and participant in UT Austin’s IGERT program, was selected as one of 25 winning entrants in the 2013 IGERT Video and Poster Competition. Go here to view Arturo’s award-winning video, which highlights his research in materials science to improve the capacity retention of cathodes in lithium ion batteries.
QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“ … what has emerged as the fundamental failure has little to do with the nuclear reactor design but rather the decision of where and how to site the facility and, most importantly, the design of back-up systems to withstand titanic tsunamis.”
